Imitators of God

Tuesday, May 05, 2015
Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet- smelling aroma.”  (Ephesians 5:1,2)

At the end of chapter 4, we are urged to have the forgiving spirit of Christ. Now at the beginning of chapter 5, we are commanded to imitate the Father's love.

Just as a child tries to walk in the shoes of their human father, God's children are to be like the heavenly Father. But how is that possible? One can never attain to the remarkable wisdom and power of God! While this is true, we are still expected to emulate the purity, forbearance, and forgiving spirit of God.

The operative word is love, which Paul says is the fulfillment of the law. (Galatians 5:14) This love promotes the proper motive in every human relationship. It is best manifested in deeds, not just words. “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.” (1 John 3:18)

God provided us with a picture of such love. We are instructed to walk in love as Christ has loved us.  Here is one who offered himself for us. There is no better example than Jesus! “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

Such love is manifested in God’s children through unselfish deeds. This means that every action toward others is motivated by a genuine care for their souls.  It calls for one to have an approachable, caring spirit, and to sacrifice one's life as an offering for the well-being of others.

God received the sacrifice of Christ as a sweet smelling aroma. This means his sacrifice was well pleasing to God. When one generously offers their life to the Lord’s cause, they too offer a sweet smelling sacrifice to God.  (Philippians 4:18

We are to be filled with Divine thoughts and warmed by Divine love.  The more one appreciates God's love toward them, the more surely one would desire to capture the loving spirit of the Father.

Christ, the Life

Tuesday, April 28, 2015
Jesus said to him, “ I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:6)

The above statement was prompted by Thomas’ inquiry: “how can we know the way?”  Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:6) Christ is not just the way or the truth, but he is the life.

This amazing concept of life is visualized in pictures in Scripture. Something very miraculous happens when a child is born and the creator gives life to that new human being. Jesus uses that same picture to describe how one is spiritually born into the family of God. Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5) Paul also illustrates this life giving principle: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17

Contrary to a popular biological theory, science proves that life always comes from life. This scientific fact is called biogenesis. The Hebrew writer states: “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.” (Hebrews 1:1,2) The seasons come and go. The spring sunshine warms the earth from the chill of winter. The fall breeze returns to cool the earth from the scorching heat of summer. Man depends upon this marvelous order for his very sustenance. It is Jesus, the creator who makes these things happen.

This same Jesus offers more than just the provisions of a physical world. Man was made in the image of God. He has a greater need than just these physical needs. Man needs spiritual direction, spiritual purpose, and a means of spiritual reconciliation with God. Jesus said, I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.(John10:10)

Before long, man's purpose on earth is fulfilled, the body returns to the dust, but the spirit of man continues. Jesus the giver of life carries the believer to the Father. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.  (John 11:25)

What a marvelous thought that Christ the creator and sustainer of the physical world also offers spiritual life for those who are spiritually dead! How precious is this Savior! Now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.  (Romans 13:11)

Jesus, the Way

Tuesday, April 14, 2015
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” (John14:6)

The above statement was prompted by Thomas's question, “How can we know the way?” The Lord plainly stated he is the only way to God. He is the truth. And he is the life.

Skeptics of all times have deemed truth to be unattainable. It was most likely what prompted the Roman Governor Pilate to question, “What is truth”? But, Jesus had stated it was for this reason he came into the world, and if anyone hears his voice, they are of the truth. Moral relativism and the pluralistic mantras of our time have distorted societies’s moral anchor and led many to believe that “all is relative”.

How does Christ reveal his truth? The most obvious answer to this question is by his recorded words. Certainly man cannot discover God”s will by his own intuition for, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9) God had to reveal his word to man, and has done so through his Son. (Hebrews 1:1,2; John 12:48; Ephesians 3:4,5; 2 Peter 3:1,2)

All of the wisdom and genius of man cannot compare to the marvelous insight of Jesus. One can learn much from his life and character. He shows us who God is, and reveals through his words and deeds important principles of love and conviction. He shows us how to escape the corruption and the dominion of sin, and how to live victorious lives.

The truth of Jesus cannot be attained by passive hearts. It is gained by diligence. God's will is to be sought with an open heart. It is to be pursued as one mining for hidden treasure, and desired for as one who is hungry and thirsty!

Come and sit at the feet of the teacher, and reap the blessings! For Jesus said, “you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)

Broken Cisterns

Tuesday, April 07, 2015

For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns-broken cisterns that can hold no water. (Jeremiah 2:13)

Jeremiah provides an inconceivable picture of Judah. Why would anyone in their right mind leave a fountain of living water and turn to a broken cistern? This was the two-sided sin of Israel. She had forsaken God and turned to idols.

There is always the temptation of following one’s own way.   Being free and independent is the Devil’s lie!  Man wants to be free from restraints! This is the allurement of Idolatry, of all sin, of broken cisterns!

Ultimately the way of godlessness leads to misery. (Romans 1:26, 27) Not only does man's way reap eternal consequences, but it does not profit him now.  When one turns from God, he removes himself from the only source of true refreshment for the soul, and the only possibility of an abundant life.

Jehovah is the fountain of living waters. He is the eternal existing one, limitless in power, and limitless in possibilities. He is the giver and sustainer of physical and spiritual life. He is the only source of satisfying nourishment for the soul.

Israel’s devotion to idols was not just a momentary act when they made the golden calf after they left Egypt.  These constant temptations finally lead to an obscene religion.  It is easy for us to fall into the same trap. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. (1 John 5:21)

Men labor to find their on way and provide their own security. It is sad that they do no better than broken cisterns. Meanwhile, they neglect the living waters of the promises of God.

Jesus, the Way

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Jesus said to him, “ I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

Before the Lord’s death, resurrection, and ascension to heaven, he prepared his apostles for their mission after his departure. This would have been a startling revelation, for most likely they did not envision the events about to take place. Thomas voiced his concern: “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”.(John 14:5) Jesus’ answer is revealed in the well known text above. Jesus states he is the way. In fact, he is the only way!

Christ is the only way to a knowledge of God. In this same setting he told Philip, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father”. (John 14:9) By his earthly life and ministry, he not only points to the disposition of the father, but displayed the very power of deity. God became flesh and dwelt among men.

Christ is the only way to favor with God. God is infinitely righteous. He is totally incapable of evil and repulsed by our sin and rebellion. The blood of Christ is the only path to reconciliation with God. (Romans 5:8-11)

Christ is the only way to fellowship with God. The unregenerate are called “children of wrath (Ephesians 2:3), but through Christ one is adopted into God's family to become his child. (Galatians 3:26,27)

Christ is the only way to the Father's presence. Jesus was about to leave them to go to the Father. Through Christ alone, one day God's people will be able to enjoy the Father’s eternal presence. Jesus is showing the way home.

Contrary to the “many roads” ploy of Satan, Jesus says, “I am the way”Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”  (Acts 4:12)
